With Week 1 of the regular season (finally!) here, a couple of Dolphins rookies have switched uniform numbers, so prepare to update your home rosters.
RB Mike Gillislee, formerly #35, will now wear #23 (his number at Florida) and LB Jelani Jenkins, who was 43, is now #53.
It’s not uncommon for rookies to get “stuck” with numbers they don’t want during training camp and the preseason, when there are 90 players on the roster. Once they make it to the regular season and they only have 52 other teammates, there’s a better selection (last year, Lamar Miller switched from 44 to 26 before Week 1).
For Miami in the preseason, nearly every available number was in use. Considering 12, 13 and 39 are all retired and 54 and 99 seem to be unofficially out of circulation for the time being (which I love), that’s 90 players squeezing into 94 possible numbers.
And that’s your geeky note of the day.
Also, with the practice squad being announced today, we have uniform numbers for those eight players:
De’Andre Presley: 31
Jordan Kovacs: 44
Sam Brenner: 65
Jason Weaver: 76
Al Lapuaho: 78
Brian Tyms: 85
Kyle Miller: 86
Marvin McNutt: 87
